La Galatea Spanish Edition Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Books Reviews

  • Miguel de Cervantes' "La Galatea" first appeared in 1585. This is an early example of Cervantes gift for prose, and his unacknowledged mastery of poetry (especially of the old Spanish style and in the Italian octaves). Inspired and modeled on Jorge de Montemayor's "Los Siete Libros de la Diana" ("The Seven Books of Diana") 1559 (which was the first pastoral novel in Spanish) and Gaspar Gil Polo's "Diana Enamorada" ("Diana") 1564, which was in turn a continuation of Montemayor's work. But Cervantes' own novel owed more to Gil Polo's version (he dedicated "El Canto de Caliope" to Gil Polo). The work itself deals with the subject of love and romance, virtues, chivalry, loyalty, good and evil, etc., all within the context and style of the pastoral novel of the 16th century and of an earlier period. This is not easy reading by any stretch of the imagination (too many characters and subplots to remember, but there is a coherence tied to the main plot and moral of the story/stories), it takes a lot of patience and persistence to get through the whole book (this edition in particular, it has lengthy notes). Mainly because it was written in the spirit of another age, that has been lost to the memory of time (the pastoral novel is a direct descendant of the ancient myths that were handed down by oral tradition, when people were still more clairvoyant than intellectual). If you can however, appreciate this eloquent allegory on the female element of nature (creative forces), that this seemingly novel-story is making about humankind's relation to the spiritual and natural-earthly forces around us, you'll be well rewarded. Cervantes was most definitely an initiate of the Mystery Schools, as his great literature is an affirmation of that very fact. This work represents the relatively unknown history of Cervantes (his time in Italy and Algeria) from a literary point of view, and it's a shame that most people are unaware or ignorant of its existence. If you are up to the task and your Spanish proficiency (believe me even native Spanish speakers are tested in their ability and perseverance) is better than average, then go ahead and read the original or find yourself an excellent English edition. The second part to "La Galatea" as promised by Cervantes himself, was unfortunately never to be (unless this has been concealed or lost to us). The spirit of Cervantes however, is thankfully eternal! ("La Galatea" Miguel de Cervantes, edicion de Francisco Lopez Estrada y Maria Teresa Lopez Garcia-Berdoy. Cuarta edicion, 2011 Ediciones Catedra, (printed in Spain) ISBN 978 84-376-1315-4) Gracias!
