The Aquaponic Farmer A Complete Guide to Building and Operating a Commercial Aquaponic System Adrian Southern Whelm King 9780865718586 Books Reviews

  • Adrian is certainly a pioneer of cold water aquaculture systems. With so many system designs and ways of going about aquaponics, the authors offer a streamlined system with proven success. This college level text got me out of swimming in internet misinformation to deciding this can be a reality. Tilapia systems are typically talked about and studied, but I am in a colder climate and was excited to hear of this book. It is as efficient as the system and process it details. The first 5 chapters take you through the complete build with pictures. The last half describes operations and provides forms. Advancements in algae based feed make this an exciting time to raise trout and would make this the most sustainable cold water operation. Aquaponics offers a solution to the net pen and traditional aquaculture pollution. I am excited to tour the farm as well. Thank you for putting so much thought and organization into this world changing book and process. Considering online courses cost around $1,000, and I recommend these as well, this was the best ~$25 bucks I've ever spent. Use the formulas in the book to scale up or down, or just follow the blueprint and get started!
  • This book is a must have for anyone considering a new commercial aquaponics venture, especially in a cold climate. It gives easy to understand instructions on how to source and build every component of the system, how to operate it and even a rough outline of a business plan. Bottom line, aquaponics can be a profitable venture. I believe it's the most sustainable form of agriculture out there right now. I'm super grateful to the authors for compiling all of this excellent information in one place. Their experience shines through and leaves me feeling prepared to start my own aquaponics system. This is not a book about why aquaponics is cool or sustainable or how to build a system for home use out of a bathtub. This is a how-to book for people who already see the potential and want a guide to get them started designing a system.
  • They take you through the motions, but they really have no understanding of what they are doing. If your looking for a hobby grow, this book is for you, but if your looking for something serious then this is not for you. They donĂ¢€™t even explain the nitrogen cycle, one of the most important parts about any farming. Zero useful information. Nothing but a cookie cutte C- college project. I wish you luck in your journeys
  • Gives good basics to set up a aquaponics greenhouse.
Has some formulas to work on volumes and flow rates for growing beds

Discusses most aspects of growing in fluid and shares problems with systems to watch out/prepare for.
Will allow you to set up a green house and succeed at growing hydroponically.
This is a great starter and if you follow guidelines will give you a working greenhouse.
Like everything else in life doing it is the key.

I like the book and will be using this to build a system to grow herbs and types of tomatoes and try strawberries vertically.
  • I haven't finished this book, but it is a great book thus far. The information in the book is concise and it covers details of the fish and plant sides to aquaponics. The authors provide excellent descriptions and concepts for building your own commercial sized aquaponics setup. I definitely recommend this book to those who have any interest in aquaponics within a greenhouse.
  • Excellent book. I don't usually write reviews but this book has everything you need from construction to business plan.
  • This is an excellent detailed outline of cold water aquaponics including system layout and design, operations schedule, and backup systems planning to run a productive aquaponics farm. I especially appreciated the insight as my location in New England is comparable to the authors' farm location in British Columbia.
  • I'm just a hobbyist, so this book goes far beyond what I require, but it's great to know what it takes to take it all to the next level.
